Guben is a town in Eastern Germany (in Brandenburg) on the border with Poland. |

Guben was founded in 1235 and it was at that time the biggest local wine producing center. This had a big influence on the development of Guben and was the reason for an increase of the population. Over the next 3 centuries the population of Guben increased dramatically. This development was brought to an end by the big epidemics in 16th century. Many people died and the number of inhabitants decreased. The next centuries were very succesful for Guben. In the 18th and 19th centuries the population of the town was two times bigger than before. Guben played a very big role in the life of the region (Guben was even visited by the Russian Czar). But then there came the I and II World Wars which ruined Guben. In 1946 Guben was divided into two parts: the German Guben and Polish Gubin. For almost 50 years both town developed separately.
Since 1989 Guben has been keeping very good contacts with their Polish twin-town Gubin. The Cooperation between Guben and Gubin is so succesful that both towns were honored with an award by for their activities the European Union.

Today Guben has about 28000 inhabitans and is a border town. The town is a member of an organisation called "Euroregion Neisse-Spree-Bobr" which fosters the economic and political development of that region. Guben is a one of the most important cities in Brandenburg. Surrounded by romantic forest and clean lakes it offers many interesting places to rest and to have fun.

Fakten
Die Stadt Guben liegt an der Lausitzer Neiße im Südosten von Brandenburg. Sie gehört zur Niederlausitz.
Guben ist von drei deutschen Seiten erreichbar:
- Aus westlicher Richtung von Cottbus über die B97 (38km)
- Aus südlicher Richtung von Forst über die B112 (24 km)
- Aus nördlicher Richtung von Frankfurt/Oder über die B112 (48 km)
Über Frankfurt/Oder besteht eine Autobahnverbindung (A12) nach Berlin. Über Cottbus und Forst hat man Anschluß an die A15 nach Dresden, Berlin und Leipzig. An dieser Autobahn wird derzeit intensiv gebaut.
Nach Osten grenzt Guben an Polen. Sie hat als EG-Grenzstadt ein Übergang, zum polnischen Teil der Stadt (Gubin).
Die Region um Guben herum bietet sich sehr für den Erholungstourismus an (ausgedehnte Waldgebiete, viele Seen und eine naturgeschützte Heidelandschaft). Das Bettenangebot hat sich sehr positiv entwickelt. Der Fremdenverkehr reagiert mit einem leicht auflebenden unterstützenden Angebot. Dazu zählen Wanderkarten, Ausweisung von Wanderrouten, Freizeitangebote als auch niveauvolle Gastronomieeinrichtungen.
